🌱 Roots of Desolation - Devlog 1: Implemented Mechanics


Hello everyone! 👋 I’m Soulix Dev, and I’m excited to share the latest progress on my indie game, Roots of Desolation. This post-apocalyptic RPG combines survival, strategy, and action, where plants are your best defense in a chaotic world.

Here’s everything that’s been implemented so far (and what’s in the works):

🌵 Defending with Plants

Plants are the key to surviving and defending yourself. So far, I’ve implemented two unique plants with essential abilities:

1️⃣ Succulent

  • Generates solar energy, the resource needed to plant more allies.
  • Key role: It’s your main resource generator, so keep it safe!

2️⃣ Cirsium

  • An offensive plant that shoots explosive thorns at enemies.
  • Recent adjustment: Now, the thorns detect enemies, ensuring a strategic impact instead of unnecessary explosions.

📝 Fun fact: Before Cirsium, I created another plant called Spikeshot, but its design was too similar to the Peashooter from PvZ. So, I decided to scrap it and create something more original!

🍴 Implemented Bars

The game uses several bars to manage your resources and abilities:

1️⃣ Solar Energy Bar:

  • Represents the resource generated by Succulent, essential for planting more allies.

2️⃣ Hunger Bar:

  • If it reaches 0, your health will start to deplete. You’ll need to search for food to keep it filled and stay alive.

3️⃣ Health Bar:

  • Classic but essential: It shows how much damage you can take before you die.

4️⃣ Energy Bar:

  • A new addition! While the related mechanics are still under development, this bar will allow you to:
    • Dash: Perfect for dodging enemies or moving quickly during combat.
    • Perform tasks like cutting tall grass: This will unlock new areas on the map or let you collect hidden resources.

🍎 Survival Mechanics

In addition to fighting, you’ll need to survive:

  • Search for food: Explore the map to keep your Hunger Bar up. Without food, your health will slowly drop.
  • Farming system (in progress): Soon, you’ll be able to plant and harvest crops, reducing your reliance on exploration.

⚙️ Features in Development

In addition to the current plants and bars, I’m working on:

  • New plants: Exploring ideas for defensive, support, and more complex abilities.
  • Farming system: Manage crops to sustainably gather resources.
  • Dash ability: A dynamic feature that will change how you interact with enemies and the environment.

What’s Next?

My current focus is on:

  • Completing the mechanics for the Energy Bar.
  • Designing a balanced survival experience with more activities and challenges.
  • Crafting an immersive narrative to make the game even more special.
